Unfortunatly some mothers can die during or after the birth and somtimes even abdondon her babies, You then have to decide whether to hand rear the babies yourself.
Hand rearing is difficult and time consuming. A baby up to the age of 3weeks has to be fed every 3hrs day and night, at 4weeks you can drop the feed between mignight and 6am.
To feed, get hold of the smallest dropper or syringe you can find(pharmacy), the best thing to use is a 1cc syringe so try your best to get one of these as eye droppers are too big and they will easily aspirate the baby.
Feed the babies very slowly and make sure no bubbles appear in the nose and that the baby does not choke.
Giving too rich food can give the babies diarrhoea which can kill them.
If the baby chokes or if bubbles appear in the nose this means that the food is going into the lungs and not the stomach in this case hold the baby face down by its hind legs(supporting the body) until the lungs are clear.
For the first week feed babies on a formula called Esbilac.1 part Esbilac and 2 Parts of water. Evaporated milk lacks nutrition and will bloat the baby + give him diarrhea.
After they open their eyes, you can mix grinded rodent block or zupreem primate diet, to the milk. Dont make it too thick. If you are using a baby cereal, make sure its not a whole grain cereal and that it has no added sugar.
After feeding, wipe the babies mouths and clean around their face, ears, fur and around their genitalia, with a peice of moistened(with warm water) cotton wool.
It is important to do this around the genitalia as they have no reflex to perform this action themselves, it stimulates the babies to urinate.
Make sure after each feed that you disinfect the feeder(you can use the sterilizer used for human babies) and before a feed rinse the feeder through to get fid of any unusual tastes.
Feeding Amounts
Always use a gram scale. Weigh the baby everyday. The feeding amount is 5% of the body weight. The weighing is very important when it comes to little babies. You can monitor the growth too. If he loses weight that means he is sick. A normal baby should gain weight ( About 1g , or more)every couple of days. If the weight is stable, dont panic. If he is losing weight..its time to panic. .
And also remember to keep a vet close by in case of an emergency.
